On May 1, 2025, Christine Ann Schwarz, a 57-year-old middle school science teacher from Mead, Colorado, was tragically killed in a head-on collision on Highway 85 near Platteville. Schwarz was driving a Toyota 4Runner when her vehicle was struck by a GMC Yukon driven by 37-year-old Kayla Dickinson who was being chased by police at high speed during a failed traffic stop initiated by the Weld County Sheriff's Office believed to be stolen. The car being chased crossed into oncoming traffic, resulting in a fiery crash that claimed the lives of Schwarz, Dickinson, and an unidentified passenger in the Yukon. The incident has sparked discussions regarding law enforcement pursuit policies and road safety on Highway 85. There were two fatalities in this police pursuit.
