OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On May 8, 2025, at approximately 2:39 p.m., deputies from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a woman threatening someone at a residence in the 11000 block of Butte Creek Island Road, near Honey Run Road in Butte Creek Canyon. Deputies encountered 48-year-old Valerie Anne Cadwallader of Chico, who was armed with a rifle and reportedly threatened officers, saying they should shoot her. A deputy fired one round from his service rifle, striking Cadwallader. Deputies applied emergency medical care and transported her to a nearby hospital, but she later died. The Butte County Office Involved Shooting Protocol Team, in cooperation with the California Department of Justice, is investigating the incident.
