On 02/28/2025, Stafford County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported reckless off-road motorcycle driving incident in the Stratford Place subdivision. An off-duty Federal Bureau of Investigation agent confronted the motorcyclist, who left the area and returned shortly with family members. Deputies initiated a traffic stop near North Jenny Lynn Road and Cross Cut Lane and attempted to control the situation. A physical confrontation ensued between the deputies, the off-duty agent, and the family members involved. Harold Chamberlain Jr, 61, of Stafford, ran from his residence to the scene intending to assist law enforcement during the confrontation. During the altercation, the off-duty FBI agent discharged his firearm, striking Chamberlain in the chest. Deputies and rescue personnel rendered aid and transported Chamberlain to a hospital, where he died from his injuries later that night. Stafford County Sheriff’s Office investigators recorded that deputies did not fire their weapons during the incident. The off-duty FBI agent’s conduct has been subject to firearm-related misdemeanor charges in connection with other incidents connected to this event. The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office did not file criminal charges for the fatal shooting.
