OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

REASON FOR POLICE CHASE:
Speeding. At approximately 5:24 a.m., a Pearl Police Department officer attempted to stop Carson's 2005 tan Lincoln Town Car for speeding on Pearson Road near Old Whitfield Road. Carson continued driving away at high speed and the officer pursued.
.
EVENT NARRATIVE:
On 08/11/2021, 30-year-old Akeem Jihad Carson of Canton was killed after crashing his Lincoln Town Car during a Pearl Police Department pursuit in Rankin County.
.
At approximately 5:24 a.m., a Pearl police officer observed Carson speeding on Pearson Road near Old Whitfield Road and attempted a traffic stop. Carson continued south on Pearson Road toward Richland at what police described as a high rate of speed, and the officer pursued.
.
The pursuit lasted approximately three minutes. At about 5:27 a.m., Carson lost control of the Lincoln near South Pearson Road and Monterey Road, left the roadway and crashed into a wooded area. Available reporting does not provide a measured maximum speed, total pursuit distance, or following distance between Carson and the pursuing police vehicle. No PIT/TVI maneuver, stop sticks, roadblock or intentional police-vehicle contact was reported.
.
Richland Fire Department personnel responded and extricated Carson from the wrecked vehicle. Pafford Ambulance transported him to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he died from his injuries.
.
Police subsequently disclosed that Carson had outstanding warrants from the Mississippi Department of Corrections for parole violations and from Forrest County for possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Those warrants were not identified as the reason police initiated the pursuit; the Pearl officer attempted the original stop for speeding.
.
Carson was 30 years old and lived in Canton. Available public reporting about his death provides little biographical information about his family, work, interests or life outside the fatal pursuit.
.
Pearl Police Department and the Rankin County Sheriff's Department investigated the fatal crash.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Pearl Police Department officer who attempted to stop Carson and participated in the pursuit has not been publicly identified in the available reporting.
