OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 03/11/2022, Charles County Sheriff's deputies attempted to stop a vehicle driven by 50-year-old Darell Byrd after a hit-and-run call near Pine Cone Circle in Waldorf. Officer Shayne Cannon initiated the stop around 4:47 a.m. Byrd briefly complied, then drove away. Officers Kenneth Barry and Shawn Griffith escalated a pursuit, which lasted under one minute. Byrd's truck veered off St. Charles Parkway and crashed into trees. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General conducted an investigation and released dashcam footage. The Charles County State’s Attorney declined prosecution.
