On April 27, 2021, officers from the Los Angeles Police Department initiated a pursuit of a white Jeep Cherokee driven by Carlos Lopez-Melendez, 50, following a series of drive-by shootings in Exposition Park and downtown Los Angeles that left two men dead and a third injured. The officers escalated a high-speed pursuit that concluded on the 91 Freeway near Brookhurst Street in Fullerton. After a standoff lasting approximately 30 minutes, during which Lopez-Melendez allegedly fired shots at officers, police opened fire, fatally shooting him.
