OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On May 14, 2025, at approximately 7:00 PM, officers responded to multiple calls about a man acting erratically and attempting to break into a public restroom on the 300 block of Oyster Point Boulevard. The man, identified as 38-year-old Andrew Mate from Ohio, was reportedly yelling obscenities and using a metal object to force entry. Upon arrival, Mate fled on foot, holding what appeared to be a firearm. Officers pursued him through a crowded public area and attempted to subdue him using less-lethal force, which proved ineffective. Mate then allegedly pointed the replica firearm at officers. Two SSFPD officers and one San Bruno officer opened fire. Mate was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or civilians were injured. The California Department of Justice is investigating the incident, and the involved officers have been placed on paid administrative leave. He had been unarmed.
