On May 28, 2025, around 7:45 p.m., the California Highway Patrol attempted to stop an allegedly stolen vehicle, escalated a chase that was then converted to CHP’s fixed-wing aircraft tracking the vehicle from the air. About 15 minutes later, ground units re-engaged as Hernandez-Garcia parked briefly, exited, then fled again when chased by police. He collided at high speed into a minivan at Park Blvd & 21st St, then lost control near 12th Avenue & East 21st Street, where his car struck a fire hydrant, a tree, a parked vehicle, and pedestrians. Marvin Boomer, a beloved Castlemont High School math teacher and pathways coach, was killed instantly. His partner, Nina Woodruff, was seriously injured.
