On May 31, 2025, around 9:15 a.m., San Diego Police Department officers responded to a welfare check in the 4400 block of Coronado Avenue after receiving reports of a man blocking traffic and making suicidal statements. The man, identified as 32-year-old Jacob Lyle Epple, entered a black sedan and drove away, prompting a police pursuit through Ocean Beach. The chase ended at the intersection of Ebers Street and Bermuda Avenue when Epple's vehicle collided with a black Jeep. Epple exited the vehicle while continuing to make suicidal statements and advanced toward officers holding a knife. Officer Yosgart Miranda, a two-year patrol officer with the Western Division, fired multiple rounds, striking Epple. Paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. One other person was injured in the crash. No body camera or additional video evidence has been released to the public at this time.
