REASON FOR CHASE: At approximately 8:55 p.m., a Linn County Sheriff’s Office deputy located a vehicle that had been reported stolen in Cedar Rapids traveling northbound on Interstate 380 south of Center Point. The deputy activated emergency lights and siren and attempted to stop the vehicle.

NARRATIVE:
On 05/31/2021, a Linn County Sheriff’s Office deputy located the reported stolen vehicle traveling northbound on Interstate 380 south of Center Point and initiated a pursuit after the driver continued northbound. The deputy pursued the vehicle north on I-380 to the Urbana exit and then west on Iowa Highway 150.

In the 2800 block of Highway 150 west of the I-380 interchange, the juvenile driver and juvenile passenger attempted to get out while the vehicle was still moving. After the driver exited, the moving vehicle ran over him. The uncontrolled vehicle continued forward and struck an occupied house.

The juvenile driver sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The passenger was located nearby and taken into custody. Authorities did not publicly release either juvenile’s name.

The Iowa State Patrol investigated the fatal incident.
