REASON FOR POLICE CHASE:
Reckless driving after the SUV rear-ended an LAPD patrol vehicle. At approximately 1:20 a.m., Southeast Division officers were driving near Hobart Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard when Eliseo Ixchopcalel's SUV rear-ended their marked police vehicle. The officers got out and approached the SUV, but Ixchopcalel drove north on Western Avenue. LAPD officers initiated a pursuit for reckless driving.

On 06/26/2021, 86-year-old Aida Villavicencio was killed inside her own home when an SUV being pursued by Los Angeles police crashed through the bedroom where she and her husband were sleeping in the 3900 block of South Buckingham Road. Villavicencio had no connection to the driver or the police encounter.

The encounter began around 1:20 a.m. when the SUV rear-ended an LAPD patrol vehicle at Hobart and Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards. When the officers got out and approached, Ixchopcalel drove away northbound on Western Avenue and police pursued him.

The pursuit continued westbound on 39th Street. As Ixchopcalel reached Buckingham Road, he attempted a southbound turn, lost control and drove off the roadway. The SUV crashed through the northeast corner of Villavicencio's house and into the bedroom.

The impact trapped Villavicencio and her husband beneath the SUV. It also severed a natural-gas line. Los Angeles firefighters were dispatched at approximately 1:23 a.m. and conducted the rescue operation.

Villavicencio died at the scene. Her husband, who was in his 90s, suffered head trauma and was transported to a hospital. Two LAPD officers suffered minor injuries while attempting to rescue the couple.

Villavicencio and her husband had celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary shortly before the crash. Their daughter, Paulina Zamudio, lived in the house with them. Zamudio said she heard the SUV crash into her parents' bedroom, found her father trapped and initially could not find her mother beneath the wreckage.

Zamudio remembered her mother as a deeply loving woman who taught her family to care about other people regardless of who they were. She said her mother's death was a loss not only to the family but to everyone who knew her.

Ixchopcalel survived the crash and was taken into custody. LAPD booked him on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter. Contemporary court information reported that his bail was set at $100,000 and that he was subsequently released on bond.
