OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

REASON FOR POLICE CHASE:
Traffic violation. At approximately 1:30 a.m., a Ukiah Police Department officer observed the 15-year-old driver of a gray 2017 Volkswagen Beetle run a red light at Gobbi Street and South State Street in Ukiah and attempted a traffic stop. The driver continued south on South State Street instead of stopping, and the officer pursued.
.
EVENT NARRATIVE:
On 08/07/2021, 14-year-old Selena Clark-Quintero of Potter Valley was killed while riding in the front passenger seat of a Volkswagen Beetle pursued by a Ukiah Police Department officer. The 15-year-old driver and a 13-year-old rear passenger suffered major injuries.
.
The encounter began at approximately 1:30 a.m. after a Ukiah officer observed the Volkswagen run a red light at Gobbi Street and South State Street. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver continued south on South State Street. Police pursued as the Volkswagen accelerated to speeds exceeding 100 mph.
.
The pursuit continued from South State Street onto southbound U.S. Highway 101. Ukiah police reported that the pursuing officer eventually lost sight of the Volkswagen as it continued south at more than 100 mph. The available accounts do not establish precisely where the officer lost visual contact, how far behind the police vehicle was at that point, or whether the officer formally terminated the pursuit or simply could no longer keep pace.
.
The Volkswagen exited Highway 101 at Rivino Ranch Road. The driver entered the intersection at high speed without stopping at the posted stop sign, continued across the intersection and left the west edge of the roadway near the Highway 101 on-ramp. The Volkswagen became airborne, struck a tree and overturned onto its roof, sustaining major front-end damage.
.
Selena was riding in the right-front passenger seat and was not wearing a seat belt. She suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The 15-year-old driver, a Redwood Valley resident, suffered major injuries and was transported to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. The 13-year-old rear passenger, an Ukiah resident who had been wearing a seat belt, also suffered major injuries and was transported for hospital treatment.
.
No PIT/TVI maneuver, stop sticks, roadblock or intentional police-vehicle contact was reported. The documented pursuit speed exceeded 100 mph. Contemporary reporting did not establish whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.
.
California Highway Patrol investigated the fatal crash. Mendocino County Sheriff's Office subsequently identified the girl killed as Selena Clark-Quintero of Potter Valley.
.
Selena was known to her family as “Lena.” She was the daughter of Amy Clark and Miguel Quintero and had two sisters, Sofia and Araceli. Her family described her as a bright young girl with big dreams who brought light to the people around her. The crash affected the Potter Valley school community sufficiently that the Potter Valley Community Unified School District arranged counseling assistance for students, family members and school staff.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Ukiah Police Department officer who attempted the traffic stop and pursued the Volkswagen has not been publicly identified in the contemporary reporting or other public sources located for this reconstruction.
