n June 3, Garland Police responded to reports of a man refusing to leave his Motel 6 room. When officers arrived, they encountered 52-year-old Shawn Dylan Burt pointing a firearm at them. Police retreated and deployed the SWAT team, which evacuated nearby rooms and obtained a warrant. SWAT negotiators used tear gas over several hours to compel him to surrender. When SWAT officers approached the window, Burt again raised his gun; a SWAT officer fired their department-issued rifle, fatally striking him. Upon entering the room, officers discovered a second victim, 69-year-old Donald Bailey Sr., who had already died from a gunshot wound hours earlier; police are investigating Bailey’s death as a homicide. No officers were injured. Garland PD’s Criminal Investigations Division and the Dallas County Medical Examiner have taken over the case.
