On 06/07/2025 at approximately 11:38 a.m., Amarillo Police officers responded to a welfare check call regarding a man reportedly asleep inside a vehicle in the Walmart parking lot at 4215 Canyon Drive. Officers identified the man as 42-year-old Justin Lee Crouch and observed a firearm inside the vehicle.
Officers backed away and took cover. Moments later, they reported hearing gunshots coming from within the vehicle. At that point, one officer fired his weapon toward the vehicle, striking Crouch. Crouch was found deceased inside the vehicle. The Amarillo Police Department has stated it is not yet clear whether Crouch died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or from the officer’s gunfire. Friends and acquaintances described him online as struggling with mental health challenges in recent years and noted that he had withdrawn from social circles.
