Imani Peterson was shot in the stomach around 1:30 a.m. on June 1, 2024, while attending a block party on the 16500 block of Trinity Street in Detroit. Two weeks later, on June 15, 2024, the 19 year old mother died from her injuries in the ICU. A $25 million federal lawsuit filed June 3, 2025, alleges that a Detroit police officer stumbled upon entering the crowd and fired recklessly into partygoers, joined by a second officer, resulting in Peterson’s death; her medical examiner ruled the death a homicide
