OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/30/2023, at approximately 1:50 a.m., Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Old Mooringsport Road area after a 911 call reporting a suspicious situation described by Louisiana State Police as a possible domestic dispute in progress. The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office separately described the original 911 call as reporting a break-in. The sheriff’s office placed the location in the 4800 block of Old Mooringsport Road, while LSP described it more generally as the 4000 block area.
.
The man encountered by deputies was subsequently identified by the Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office as Nathan Grice, 43. Grice lived at the property with his wife, Deborah Grice, 44.
.
According to the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, when deputies arrived Grice allegedly fired at them from behind an adjacent house. Louisiana State Police described deputies as encountering gunfire from a man in the area as they arrived. Deputies returned fire, striking Grice.
.
Later reporting provides additional detail about the confrontation. Caddo Parish Deputy Lummus, who was present during the incident, said Grice allegedly fired several rounds and repeatedly changed locations. Lummus described helping a woman and child who were attempting to reach safety and said gunfire was directed toward them as they crossed an exposed area.
.
Multiple Caddo Parish deputies exchanged gunfire with Grice. Police gunfire struck him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The individual deputies who fired the shots that struck Grice were not identified in the public releases located for this update.
.
After the shooting, deputies searched the residence they believed was associated with Grice and discovered Deborah Grice dead inside. The discovery transformed the incident into both a police-shooting investigation and a separate homicide investigation.
.
Louisiana State Police crime-scene technicians and Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office personnel jointly processed the property. Investigators subsequently determined from evidence at the scene that Deborah Grice had died before deputies arrived and before the police shooting of Nathan Grice occurred.
.
Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations assumed the lead role in investigating both the killing of Deborah Grice and the fatal police shooting of Nathan Grice. The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office subsequently classified both deaths among Caddo Parish’s homicides for 2023 and ordered autopsies.
.
The police response was substantial. 911 records reviewed by KSLA indicated that as many as 20 law-enforcement units responded to the incident.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
Caddo Parish Deputy Lummus has subsequently been publicly identified as one of the deputies present during the confrontation with Grice. In a 2024 interview concerning his selection as a local “Hero of the Year,” Lummus specifically discussed the Grice incident and described moving a woman and child to safety while Grice allegedly fired toward their location.
.
The available account establishes Lummus’s presence and direct involvement in the incident but does not establish that he fired at Grice or that his gunfire caused Grice’s death. The officers who fired the fatal or potentially fatal rounds have not been publicly identified
