On 06/15/2025 at about 3 a.m., Miami Police responded to a disturbance near Northwest First Court and Twenty Third Street in Wynwood. Officers arrived amid an ongoing fight between two men and a female bystander. According to police statement by Officer Michael Vega, officers observed “a male who was armed" with a firearm. It remains unclear whether the armed man was firing or threatening anyone as no independent confirmation from surveillance or witnesses so far suggests shots came from him. Multiple officers opened fire. The targeted man and a woman later identified as Evelyn Valdes, 28 were both struck and killed while another bystander was shot in the hand. Valdes was a bystander accidentally shot by police period Circumstances show police may have fired into a crowd. Witnesses reported about 10 gunshots. Surveillance footage and ongoing witness interviews may clarify whether the armed man fired first or if police fired preemptively. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation. The cause and manner of death for all victims remain pending official review.
