OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/25/2023, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Ramone Jackson, 20, of Picayune was driving north on Mississippi Highway 43 in Pearl River County with his girlfriend, Shelby Rae Kevwitch, 19, as his passenger. Pearl River County Sheriff David Allison said a sheriff’s deputy observed their vehicle traveling at an estimated speed exceeding 100 mph. The specific initiating reason for the attempted traffic stop was therefore extreme speeding.

According to Sheriff Allison, the deputy activated his emergency blue lights and turned to follow the vehicle. The deputy traveled approximately one-quarter mile in its direction before his patrol vehicle struck debris in the roadway and went into a ditch.

Jackson’s vehicle continued north on Highway 43. Near a curve just beyond Otis Stewart Road, the vehicle left the roadway, struck a large oak tree and burst into flames. Jackson and Kevwitch were both killed.

A second vehicle subsequently encountered debris from the fatal collision. Mississippi Highway Patrol identified its driver as Brandon McConnell, 25, of Carriere, and reported that he sustained moderate injuries.

Mississippi Highway Patrol investigated the fatal crash. MHP's subsequent account identified Jackson as the driver and Kevwitch as his passenger and confirmed that the crash occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. on August 25.

Jackson and Kevwitch had been in a relationship for approximately five years. Kevwitch had graduated from Picayune Memorial High School in 2023 and was enrolled at Blue Cliff College. Her obituary identifies Jackson as the love of her life and confirms that both died on August 25, 2023.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Pearl River County sheriff’s deputy who attempted to stop Jackson and followed the vehicle for approximately one-quarter mile before the patrol vehicle entered a ditch was not publicly identified in the reporting.
