OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/25/2023, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Shelby Rae Kevwitch, 19, of Picayune was riding as a passenger in a vehicle driven north on Mississippi Highway 43 by Ramone Jackson, 20. Pearl River County Sheriff David Allison said a sheriff’s deputy observed the vehicle traveling at an estimated speed exceeding 100 mph. The specific initiating reason for the attempted traffic stop was therefore extreme speeding.

According to Sheriff Allison, the deputy activated his emergency blue lights and turned to follow the vehicle. The deputy traveled approximately one-quarter mile in its direction before his patrol vehicle struck debris in the roadway and went into a ditch.

The vehicle in which Kevwitch was riding continued north on Highway 43. Near a curve just beyond Otis Stewart Road, it left the roadway, struck a large oak tree and burst into flames. Kevwitch and the driver were both killed.

A second vehicle subsequently encountered debris from the fatal collision. Mississippi Highway Patrol identified its driver as Brandon McConnell, 25, of Carriere, and reported that he sustained moderate injuries.

Mississippi Highway Patrol investigated the fatal crash. MHP’s subsequent account confirmed that Kevwitch was the passenger, that she was 19 years old and that the crash occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. on August 25.

Kevwitch had graduated from Picayune Memorial High School in 2023 and was enrolled at Blue Cliff College. Her obituary states that she died on August 25, 2023.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Pearl River County sheriff’s deputy who attempted the traffic stop and followed the vehicle for approximately one-quarter mile before the patrol vehicle entered a ditch was not publicly identified.
