On 08/27/2023, law-enforcement officers pursued John William Stacy, 37, during a multi-agency vehicle pursuit in southwest Louisiana. The pursuit ultimately traveled south of Vinton toward the Ellender Bridge area on Louisiana Highway 27.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that the pursuit ended when Stacy crashed his vehicle near the Ellender Bridge. Law-enforcement officers converged on the crash location.

According to the official account, Stacy exited or engaged officers following the crash and gunfire was exchanged between Stacy and law enforcement. Police alleged that Stacy fired at officers during the confrontation. Multiple officers returned fire.

Stacy was struck by police gunfire and died at the scene. A law-enforcement officer was also struck and injured during the exchange of gunfire. The officer survived.

Because officers from multiple agencies participated in the pursuit and final confrontation, Louisiana State Police assumed responsibility for investigating the fatal police shooting. State Police processed the scene, collected ballistic and other physical evidence, and investigated the actions of the officers who fired.

Louisiana State Police subsequently released video evidence documenting portions of the pursuit and fatal confrontation. The video release provided additional documentation of the multi-agency response and the exchange of gunfire near the Ellender Bridge.
