OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/25/2023, at approximately 2:20 p.m., a Coweta County Sheriff’s Office deputy saw 27-year-old Anthony Richard Fields II driving a white Chevrolet Corvette on Interstate 85 near Newnan. Sheriff Lenn Wood said Fields passed the deputy while traveling approximately 119 to 120 mph. Wood also said police would initially have cited Fields for speeding and a window-tint violation.
The deputy chose to pursue Fields from Interstate 85 toward the Bullsboro Drive exit. Newnan police joined the pursuit after Coweta County deputies requested assistance. Police pursued Fields through Newnan at speeds that reportedly exceeded 120 mph.
Video recorded near Herring Road and Bullsboro Drive showed Fields stopped in a concrete traffic-dividing area while two officers stood outside their vehicles with guns pointed at him. Fields backed the Corvette away and continued driving north on Herring Road while Newnan police followed. Police continued pursuing him through a residential area rather than ending the pursuit over the speeding and window-tint violations.
Police said Fields later drove back out of the subdivision and collided head-on with a Coweta County Sheriff’s Office vehicle. The collision caused minor injuries to the deputy inside. The pursuit ended near Herring Road and Palomino Drive.
Coweta County deputies released police dog Kilo against Fields as he got out of the Corvette. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Fields had a handgun and pointed it toward deputies while Kilo was biting or holding onto his arm. Multiple deputies fired repeatedly, striking Fields several times. Police provided medical aid, but Fields died at the scene.
Kilo suffered a gunshot wound during the shooting. Initial reports did not establish whether a deputy’s bullet or a shot fired by Fields struck the dog. Public reporting likewise did not clearly establish whether Fields fired his gun. The presence of numerous shell-casing evidence markers demonstrated that police fired multiple rounds, but publicly available reports did not state the exact number of shots, which officers fired, how many bullets struck Fields, or whether investigators recovered evidence that Fields discharged his weapon.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation investigated the shooting at the request of the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office and Newnan Police Department. Police later released selected body-camera footage showing deputies attending to the wounded dog. Available news coverage does not establish that police released complete, unedited footage showing the pursuit, the decision to deploy Kilo, Fields’ actions immediately before police fired, or the complete shooting.
The agencies did not publicly identify the deputies who fired at Fields in the accessible reports. No reliable public record located through August 2026 identifies criminal charges, disciplinary action, termination, or decertification against any participating deputy or Newnan officer. No publicly reported wrongful-death lawsuit, settlement, jury award, or prosecutor’s charging announcement was located.
The pursuit began over speeding and a window-tint violation. Police continued it through Newnan at triple-digit speeds, confronted Fields at gunpoint when his car briefly stopped, resumed pursuing him when he drove away, and ultimately released a police dog and shot him multiple times after the pursuit ended.
