On 07/09/2025 at approximately 9:55 a.m., officers with the Dallas Police Department responded to a mental health crisis call reporting a man armed with a knife in the 3000 block of Fairview Avenue, located in the Old East Dallas neighborhood. The man, later identified as 37-year-old Jake Miller, was reportedly seen by witnesses holding a knife to his own neck and behaving erratically, including kicking and damaging a door.
Upon arrival, officers issued multiple verbal commands and attempted to defuse the situation using less-lethal tactics, which were unsuccessful. According to official statements, Miller then advanced toward officers while still armed with the knife. At that point, at least one officer discharged a firearm, striking Miller.
Emergency medical services responded immediately, and Miller was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. No officers were physically injured during the encounter.
The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office and the Office of Community Police Oversight have launched parallel investigations into the shooting. The name of the officer who opened fire has not been released, and body camera footage has not yet been made public.
