OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On Sunday, July 13, 2025, around 10:30 a.m., San Jose police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man stabbing a child near the playground at Cataldi Park, located at the intersection of Cataldi Drive and Cataldi Park. Witnesses stated that the man, later identified as 48-year-old Mateusz Dzierbun, was seen stabbing his 9-year-old sonin broad daylight.
Officers arrived on the scene within minutes and located both the man and the child in the park. The boy was lying unresponsive and bleeding. Dzierbun remained armed with a knife. According to police, officers attempted verbal de-escalation for approximately three minutes, repeatedly commanding him to drop the weapon. Body camera footage, reviewed internally but not yet released to the public, allegedly shows Dzierbun ignoring commands and charging toward the officers with the knife still in hand.
At that point, officers opened fire, fatally shooting Dzierbun. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The child was also declared dead at the scene from multiple stab wounds. According to police radio traffic and official briefings, the officers involved were not wearing body armor, and the event unfolded very quickly. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and the San Jose Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit have launched concurrent investigations into the shooting.
Police confirmed that Dzierbun and the child were father and son. Authorities have not disclosed whether there was a history of domestic violence, custody disputes, or mental health concerns. Family members and neighbors were seen mourning at the park later that day, and a growing memorial of flowers and stuffed animals has formed near the crime scene.
The Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the autopsy reports for either the child or Dzierbun. The names of the involved officers remain withheld, and the officers' duty status has not been publicly confirmed.
