On July 19, 2025, El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies Brenden Koehlinger and Juanito Cuellar responded to a disturbance involving a firearm at a home on Tranters Creek Way in Security Widefield. Armed officers confronted 59-year-old Brian Prine at the residence. Police reported that a struggle broke out while attempting to detain him. During the altercation, Prine reportedly took control of a deputy’s taser and discharged it.
Both deputies immediately escalated to lethal force, each firing one round at close range. Prine was struck and collapsed at the scene. No immediate medical transport was attempted before he was declared dead. The Colorado Springs Police Department is conducting the official investigation, while the El Paso County Coroner’s Office is handling the autopsy. Both deputies were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the inquiry.
