On July 17, 2025, San Antonio Police Department officers engaged in a high-speed pursuit of a stolen white Chevrolet Camaro traveling southbound on Interstate 35 near Cassin Road. The chase escalated rapidly, and at approximately 2:30 p.m., the fleeing Camaro collided violently with the trailer of a private passenger bus operated by Jose “Tito” Guerra.
The impact forced Guerra’s bus into the guardrail and directly into the path of an 18-wheeler, which struck the bus broadside, causing it to overturn on the freeway. The Camaro, after the initial collision, continued uncontrolled and collided with a pickup truck.
Jose Guerra, the bus driver, sustained fatal injuries at the scene and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
This catastrophic chain reaction involved four vehicles and resulted in five fatalities, including passengers on the bus and bystanders. At least 21 individuals, including several children and elderly passengers, suffered injuries of varying severity. Emergency responders worked swiftly to evacuate victims and manage the sprawling crash site, which caused major traffic disruptions on Interstate 35 for hours.
The San Antonio Police Department, alongside Texas Department of Transportation and other emergency agencies, is conducting a thorough investigation into the pursuit’s circumstances, the decision to continue the chase, and the resulting crash.
