On the morning of July 17, 2025, Stockton police responded at approximately 7:58 a.m. to reports of a shooting incident at the CrossFit gym located on West Eight Mile Road near the Elkhorn Athletic Club.
Officers arrived to find two men suffering from gunshot wounds. One was identified as Robert Nelson Jr., who was transported in critical condition to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. The other was Miguel López Cuen, a retired California Highway Patrol officer, who was determined to be the shooter.
