On July 16, 2025, law enforcement initiated a stop attempt on a stolen pickup truck driven by 25-year-old Orlando Silva-Lemus near Houston's Hobby Airport. Silva-Lemus refused to comply, triggering a high-speed, multi-county pursuit that extended over 30 miles, involving multiple law enforcement agencies including the Harris County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office and the Galveston Police Department.
During the pursuit, Silva-Lemus allegedly fired several rounds at pursuing officers’ vehicles, significantly escalating the danger. Police deployed spike strips on the Gulf Freeway (I-45) in an attempt to disable the vehicle, and eventually performed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver near Broadway and 54th Street in Galveston to bring the chase to an end.
After the vehicle was stopped, Silva-Lemus exited the truck armed with a handgun and immediately opened fire on officers. Responding officers returned fire, fatally wounding him at the scene. No officers were reported injured during the shootout.
