OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
At approximately 1:30 a.m. on July 23, 2025, deputies with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office clocked a truck traveling 124 mph on State Highway 31 west of Tyler, near Greenbrier Road. The driver, 17-year-old Joel Munoz, turned off his headlights and fled, prompting a pursuit. A second deputy joined as the truck turned onto Pleasant Hollow Road. The high-speed chase ended violently when the vehicle left the roadway, flipped multiple times, and ejected both Munoz and a juvenile passenger.
Joel Munoz was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. The passenger was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The pursuit and crash remain under investigation by Smith County authorities.
