On July 26, 2025, Newton County deputies operating a checkpoint on Georgia Highway 36 signaled a gray Ford Fusion to stop. When the vehicle continued driving, deputies escalated to a high-speed pursuit. The chase moved onto GA-81, with officers continuing through Covington. Near Flat Shoals Road, the vehicle struck a utility pole and came to rest in the roadway. The 16-year-old driver was killed in the crash. A passenger sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the pursuit and the decisions made by law enforcement.
