On July 27, 2025, San Diego County deputies responded to a residence on the 9000 block of Willowgrove Avenue in Santee. The situation escalated into a prolonged standoff that lasted nearly seven hours, prompting the deployment of a SWAT team. Around 8:20 p.m., deputies deployed gas into the home to force the individual outside. Michael Redding emerged and reportedly fired at deputies, who opened fire and killed him. The San Diego Police Department is conducting the investigation under a countywide protocol for officer-involved shootings.
