At approximately 8:15 a.m. on July 30, 2025, Master Police Officer Jordan Laupert, a ten-year veteran assigned temporarily to street patrol, encountered a 21-year-old man near the rear of the District Two Police Station at 9330 North 30th Street. What began as a seemingly cordial exchange through a fence—where the man asked Laupert for the address of headquarters and even said “thank you”—suddenly escalated when the man shot Laupert in the leg as he walked away. Laupert immediately deactivated his body camera but reactivated it right after being shot. Fellow officers rendered aid with a tourniquet before Tampa Fire Rescue transported Laupert to the hospital, where he was stabilized and later released. The man fled toward Busch Gardens but was found nearby with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Authorities believe he was in the midst of a mental health crisis. No protests or community challenges to the official account have surfaced.
