OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/01/2025, deputies with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office responded to Abernathy Road near Signal Hill Lane in Inman after reports of a suspicious person lying in the roadway. Deputies took Paul Andrew Lockett, 37, into custody on charges of public disorderly conduct and pedestrian in the roadway after determining he was uncooperative.
After Lockett was transported to the Spartanburg County Detention Center, he became aggressive as deputies attempted to remove his handcuffs and place him in a holding cell. Deputies deployed a Taser. Shortly afterward, Lockett suffered a medical emergency. Deputies requested EMS, and he was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:59 p.m.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) assumed responsibility for the investigation. The Spartanburg County Coroner identified the decedent as Paul Andrew Lockett. The investigation remains ongoing.
