OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/19/2023, at approximately 2:40 a.m., 51-year-old George Evener of Toledo was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle northeast on Miami Street near Oregon Road when an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop him. The specific initiating reason for the stop was speeding: OSHP reported that Evener was traveling 54 mph in a 40-mph zone.

Evener turned onto Oakdale Avenue and briefly pulled onto the shoulder before continuing driving away. The trooper pursued him on Oakdale.

Within moments of the pursuit beginning, Evener lost control of the motorcycle near Oakdale Avenue and Tracy Street. The motorcycle struck a curb, left the roadway and crashed into a telephone pole.

The trooper approached Evener after the crash and ordered him to show his hands. The trooper observed a handgun lying on the ground beside Evener and moved the firearm away before beginning emergency medical assistance. The trooper performed CPR until Toledo Police Department officers arrived and took over resuscitation efforts. Toledo Fire and Rescue personnel transported Evener to a hospital.

Evener died at the hospital. The Lucas County Coroner’s Office determined that he died from multiple blunt-force injuries sustained in the motorcycle crash. OSHP subsequently released dash-camera footage documenting the attempted traffic stop, pursuit and crash.
