OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/02/2025 at approximately 4:54 p.m., officers with the Columbus Police Department were conducting an investigation in the 3000 block of 13th Street in Columbus when they encountered Lauree Jankowski, 33. During the encounter, Jankowski attacked one of the officers with a knife, inflicting a stab wound. Another officer fired a service weapon, striking Jankowski.
Officers immediately rendered medical aid, but Jankowski was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured officer was transported to Columbus Community Hospital, treated for the stab wound, and released later that evening. Investigators recovered the knife at the scene.
The Nebraska State Patrol Special Investigations Team assumed responsibility for the investigation at the request of the Columbus Police Department. Under Nebraska law, the shooting will also be reviewed by a Platte County grand jury.
