OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/02/2025, Albuquerque Police Department officers responded after Albuquerque Fire Rescue personnel reported hearing gunshots while responding to a domestic violence call near Menaul Boulevard NE and Morris Street NE. Officers learned that Martin Hernandez, 33, had been involved in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend and was armed with a handgun.
Officers located Hernandez outside the residence and repeatedly ordered him to drop the handgun. One officer fired a less-lethal launcher in an attempt to gain compliance. Hernandez remained armed, and another officer fired his service weapon, striking him. Officers rendered medical aid until Albuquerque Fire Rescue personnel arrived, but Hernandez died at the scene. Investigators recovered a handgun next to Hernandez.
The Multi-Agency Task Force investigated the shooting. Albuquerque Police later released body-worn camera footage and other video recordings from the incident as part of the department's critical incident briefing. The investigation remains ongoing.
