OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/05/2025 at approximately 5:15 p.m., Peoria police officers responded to reports of a suspicious person armed with a wooden bat near the intersection of Northeast Glen Oak Avenue and North Prospect Road. Officers contacted Brandon M. Lewis, 41, in the East Bluff neighborhood.
According to the Peoria Police Department, Lewis swung the wooden bat at officers and struck one officer. One officer deployed a Taser while another fired a single round, striking Lewis. Lewis ran a short distance before collapsing. Officers took him into custody and began lifesaving measures until paramedics arrived. Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene. The Peoria County Coroner determined he died from a single gunshot wound.
The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation assumed responsibility for investigating the shooting. Officer Veronica Orozco, who discharged her firearm, and Officer Da'Monte Williams, who deployed the Taser, were both placed on critical incident leave in accordance with department policy.
The investigation remains ongoing. The Illinois State Police are conducting the criminal investigation, while the Peoria Police Department is conducting an internal administrative review of the officers' actions.
