On 08/06/2025, a Chevrolet Silverado was reported stolen from Hardy Chevrolet on Browns Bridge Road in Gainesville. Georgia State Patrol troopers located the truck and attempted a traffic stop. The driver, Daniel Thomas Davis, continued driving away while troopers pursued. The pursuit reached speeds exceeding 100 mph as it traveled through Hall County toward Jackson County.
Troopers attempted multiple PIT maneuvers during the pursuit but were initially unsuccessful. During the chase, a dog riding unsecured in the bed of the stolen pickup was thrown from the vehicle onto the roadway. Authorities have not released information regarding the dog's condition.
The pursuit continued south on Candler Road (SR-60), where Davis drove into the rear of a vehicle operated by Agustin Rivera, 50, forcing it off the roadway and into a wooded area. Rivera sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
After the collision, Davis continued driving away until Georgia State Patrol troopers successfully performed a PIT maneuver on GA-332 near Talmo, disabling the pickup. Davis fled on foot before troopers deployed a Taser and took him into custody. He was charged with felony murder and numerous additional offenses. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the pursuit and the fatal collision.
