OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/05/2025 at approximately 9:04 p.m., a deputy with the Des Moines County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic disturbance at a rural residence near Burlington. The deputy contacted David Maupin, 46, outside the residence. During a verbal exchange, Maupin became uncooperative and produced a firearm. The deputy fired his service weapon, striking Maupin.
Deputies and emergency medical personnel rendered aid at the scene, but Maupin died from his injuries. The involved deputy was not injured.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation assumed responsibility for the investigation. Deputy Brett Haubrich was placed on paid critical incident leave in accordance with Des Moines County Sheriff's Office policy. Upon completion of the investigation, the findings will be forwarded to the Iowa Attorney General's Office for review.
