On 08/14/2023, at approximately 10:50 p.m., a marked Raleigh Police Department patrol vehicle struck 51-year-old Pedro Lopez while he was crossing Capital Boulevard near Calvary Drive in Raleigh. Officers responded immediately and performed CPR until Wake County EMS personnel arrived. Lopez was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Raleigh police stated that Lopez was crossing Capital Boulevard outside a marked crosswalk when the collision occurred. The patrol vehicle remained at the scene, and the officer driving it cooperated with investigators. The crash damaged the hood of the marked police cruiser.
