OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/13/2025, around 7:00 a.m., Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officers responded to reports of a man attempting to set fire to a home while armed with a knife. After the fire was extinguished, the man fled. A K-9 unit located him near Buckman Street and East 25th Street. Officer C. Bumgarner deployed a Taser, but Gillis advanced with the knife. Bumgarner opened fire, killing him on scene. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and State Attorney’s Office are reviewing the case. Family members later questioned whether de-escalation options were exhausted before deadly force was used.
