OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On July 26, 2025, deputies with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve multiple arrest warrants on Jared Randell Nelson, 35, of Eureka, at a residence on the 1300 block of Glendale Drive in Humboldt County. Nelson fled on foot into nearby bushes and fired a .45-caliber handgun at deputies. Deputies opened fire and shot Nelson. He was transported to a hospital where he died of his injuries. A firearm was recovered at the scene. Deputies Jonathan Eckert, Cole Kane, and Russell Hurley were involved in the shooting and have been placed on paid administrative leave. The Humboldt County Critical Incident Response Team is conducting an independent investigation.
