On 08/26/2025, at approximately 3:58 p.m., Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Monte Carlo Apartments at 307 NW 72nd Avenue after 911 callers reported gunfire and an injured woman. The man involved was later identified as 50-year-old Javier Albriza Jara. The wounded woman was his estranged wife, Yudaisy Salgueiro. Later records identify Salgueiro as 46 years old, despite initial news reports describing her as 47.

Witnesses and later-released video showed Jara armed with a handgun and moving through the apartment complex before deputies arrived. Salgueiro said she and Jara had been married for approximately a decade but had separated during the previous year and had not spoken for months.

Police alleged that Jara shot Salgueiro in the chest. Salgueiro escaped from the immediate area, and deputies found her wounded outside the apartment. Deputies provided medical aid before Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported her to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. She survived after spending six days hospitalized.

Witnesses directed deputies to Jara’s fourth-floor apartment. Body-camera footage released by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office in October 2025 shows deputies approaching the open apartment door with their guns drawn. Police alleged that Jara was inside with a handgun.

The footage shows a deputy repeatedly ordering Jara to show his hands while Jara handled the handgun. Gunfire then erupted between Jara and three Miami-Dade deputies. The deputies withdrew from the doorway and remained outside while the department’s Special Response Team was called to the apartment.

The Special Response Team subsequently entered and found Jara lying on the floor. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced him dead.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated the shooting. The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office subsequently conducted its own review of the fatal encounter and issued a formal close-out report on 07/15/2026. The State Attorney’s Office concluded its criminal review without prosecuting the deputies.
