On July 13, 2025, Los Angeles police responded to reports of a man obstructing traffic and holding a ceremonial dagger on Figueroa Street near Olympic Boulevard. The individual, identified as Gurpreet Singh, was performing movements consistent with Gatka, a Sikh martial art, while carrying a khanda, a traditional double-edged ceremonial sword.
Officers issued repeated commands for Singh to drop the weapon. At one point he appeared to attempt self-harm, though details remain unconfirmed. Singh then got back into his vehicle and drove erratically while still holding the sword. After crashing into a police cruiser during a short pursuit, he exited the vehicle still holding the ceremonial dagger and moved toward officers. At that point, police shot and killed him. LAPD later released video; the three Hollenbeck Division officers who fired were Jimenez, Godinez, and Ruiz.Singh was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The ceremonial sword was recovered at the scene, and LAPD has released body-camera footage and opened an investigation into the shooting.
