OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/27/2025, at approximately 10:20 p.m., 74-year-old Gregory John Beckmann was struck and killed by an on-duty Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputy driving a marked patrol SUV at the intersection of East Chapman Avenue and Prospect Street in Orange. Beckmann’s identity was released the following day by the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Division.

The deputy was traveling west on East Chapman Avenue in the number two lane when the patrol SUV struck Beckmann. Police said Beckmann was crossing Chapman Avenue outside a marked crosswalk.

The deputy was not responding to an emergency call when the collision occurred. The patrol SUV was not operating its emergency lights or siren. Photographs and video from the scene showed substantial impact damage to the front passenger-side portion of the SUV’s windshield.

The deputy stopped after striking Beckmann. Orange Fire Department personnel responded and pronounced Beckmann dead at the scene.

Because the collision occurred within the City of Orange and involved an Orange County sheriff’s deputy, the Orange Police Department investigated the fatal crash rather than the Sheriff’s Department. Orange Police Lt. Phil McMullen provided details of the investigation to the media.
