On Friday afternoon, August 29, 2025, Escondido police attempted to stop a vehicle, and the driver refused to stop. Officers escalated a chase that traveled southbound on Interstate 15 and ended in a crash near the SR-163 interchange in Miramar. Following the crash, police opened fire into the vehicle, killing a woman. The California Department of Justice announced it is investigating the case under Assembly Bill 1506, which requires the state to review all police killings of unarmed individuals.
