OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/30/2025, at approximately 6:45 p.m., 47-year-old Christopher Reed and passenger Kelly Wise, 47, were in a small silver hatchback in the Parkway Centre shopping area in Grove City when police began responding to reported retail thefts. Police later identified Reed as the driver and alleged that he had stolen merchandise from Dick’s Sporting Goods on Stringtown Road.
.
Police subsequently located Reed’s vehicle parked in a fire lane near the exit of a nearby Walmart. A Grove City K9 officer positioned a police cruiser in an attempt to block Reed’s vehicle. Police alleged that Reed struck the side of the cruiser, causing minor damage, and drove away.
.
Importantly, Grove City police later said officers did not immediately pursue Reed after he drove away from the Walmart. An off-duty Grove City officer subsequently reported seeing Reed’s vehicle traveling west on the wrong side of White Road at high speed. Police also alleged that Reed continued onto Hoover Road at speeds reaching approximately 75 mph and nearly struck a motorcycle while changing lanes.
.
A Grove City police sergeant then expressly authorized a pursuit over the radio because of Reed’s reported driving. Another officer positioned near Interstate 71 saw Reed’s vehicle and began pursuing it northbound on I-71.
.
Reed exited Interstate 71 at Greenlawn Avenue. After leaving the interstate, he entered the roundabout near Green Lawn Cemetery, lost control of the hatchback and crashed into a concrete structure near the cemetery entrance.
.
Reed and Wise suffered critical injuries. The pursuing officer attempted to remove them from the wreckage and provide aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Both Reed and Wise died from injuries sustained in the crash.
.
Grove City police subsequently released Reed’s and Wise’s identities. The department also said video of the incident was being reviewed and that the pursuit itself was undergoing an internal review to determine whether the officers involved complied with department pursuit policy.
.
At the Grove City Council meeting on 09/02/2025, Police Chief Eric Scott publicly discussed the pursuit and said Reed had reportedly reached approximately 75 mph while traveling left of center on Hoover Road. Scott also confirmed that a sergeant authorized the pursuit and said the department was reviewing the officers’ actions for compliance with policy.
.
This report is for Reed as the driver. Kelly Wise requires a separate database entry as the passenger killed by the police chase crash.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND
The available public reporting and subsequent coverage identify the roles of the K9 officer, off-duty officer, supervising sergeant and pursuing officer but do not publicly identify them by name.
