OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/12/2023, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Vermont State Police troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a 2019 Jeep Compass on Braintree Hill Road in Braintree. The driver had returned the Jeep to the roadway by the time troopers arrived. Troopers approached and began speaking with him at the initial crash scene.
While troopers were investigating the first crash, the driver abruptly drove away with five passengers still inside the Jeep. Vermont State Police pursued him from the scene. He traveled only a short distance before crashing a second time on Braintree Hill Road. Police later identified the driver as 28-year-old Pedro Guadalupe of Springfield, Massachusetts.
Raymond Martin, an 80-year-old passenger from Eden, suffered a broken back, multiple rib fractures, and other serious injuries in the second crash. Emergency personnel initially transported him to Gifford Medical Center in Randolph and later transferred him to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Martin remained hospitalized until he died from his injuries on 08/29/2023, 17 days after the crash.
Two children, ages 11 and 12, also suffered injuries and received treatment at Gifford Medical Center. The Jeep’s two other adult passengers, 39-year-old Heather Quinn of Randolph and 46-year-old Michael Vell of Lexington, South Carolina, survived. Vermont State Police determined that the passengers sustained their injuries in the second crash after the driver drove away from troopers.
