OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
n 08/13/2023, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Atwater Police Department officers attempted to stop a silver Dodge Durango during an investigation involving stolen property in the 1000 block of Fairway Drive. Korey James Unti continued driving away while officers pursued.
The pursuit continued to the area of Kelso Drive and Nashua Street, where Unti crashed into a parked vehicle. He got out of the SUV and ran through an apartment complex in the 5000 block of Crest Road while officers pursued him on foot.
During the foot pursuit, investigators said Unti removed a handgun and pointed it at one of the pursuing officers. The officer fired, striking Unti at least once. Officers requested emergency medical assistance, but Unti died at the scene. Investigators recovered a handgun near his body. No officers were physically injured.
The Merced County Sheriff's Office assumed responsibility for the criminal investigation under the county's officer-involved shooting protocol. The Merced County District Attorney's Office reviewed the investigation to determine whether criminal charges were warranted. The officer who fired was placed on administrative leave immediately following the shooting, consistent with department policy.
The Merced County Coroner identified the deceased on 08/22/2023 as 36-year-old Korey James Unti of Merced.
