OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/12/2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Cadillac Police Department officers responded to the 500 block of Aldrich Street after multiple 911 callers reported that a man armed with a machete was attempting to break into an occupied residence. Dispatch advised responding officers that the man was still outside and armed.
When an officer arrived, neighbors directed him toward the backyard of a nearby residence. The officer encountered 49-year-old Matthew Bigler holding a machete against a dog's throat. The officer repeatedly ordered Bigler to drop the machete. Instead, Bigler advanced toward the officer while still holding the weapon. The officer fired his service weapon, striking Bigler. Officers immediately requested emergency medical assistance and attempted life-saving measures, but Bigler died at the scene. The dog survived the incident.
The Michigan State Police conducted the investigation. Cadillac Police later released the responding officer's body-worn camera video showing the encounter. On 11/01/2023, Wexford County Prosecutor Corey Wiggins concluded that the officer's use of deadly force was legally justified under Michigan law and declined to file criminal charges.
