OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 09/10/2025, Austin police located a stolen vehicle in the 700 block of Azie Morton Road near Zilker Park. While waiting for a tow truck, officers encountered Kay Smith, 30, and Brandon Thompson. When officers ordered them to show their hands, Thompson fired multiple shots, striking Smith in the head and Officer Adam Reinhart in the abdomen. Reinhart returned fire. Smith was transported to the hospital and later declared brain-dead. Thompson fled the scene but was later wounded by a homeowner during a break-in. Officer Reinhart was hospitalized and is expected to recover.
